The next society Film Screening (in person rather than online) will be Merry Go Round (Körhinta), dir Zoltán Fábri (1956).
Merry Go Round was made during Imre Nagy’s government and set in 1953. Its story of star-crossed peasant lovers during the period of agricultural collectivisation has some of the energy and hope which characterised the period immediate before the October Uprising. It became an instant classic, using some pioneering filming and editing techniques, launching the career of the famous actress Mari Törőcsik, and causing many critics (including François Truffaut) to compalin bitterly when it did not win the Palme d’Or at Cannes that year.
